The latest technologies including the Metaverse are increasingly becoming a regular part of our day-to-day lives. Even though it is hard to conclude right now that these innovations are mainstream just yet, over half of the respondents of a 2022 survey in the UK at least knew what the Metaverse is.
In this article, we are going to look at a few new and unusual projects from this sphere that have appeared in the last six months.
Metaverse Seoul
Do you find that traveling all the way to the capital of South Korea is too much of a hustle? Well, the city’s authorities have an answer: a decision was made to create a virtual replica of Seoul. It is also supposed to enhance public service because the city officials are represented as avatars there, and citizens can address their questions online.
On January 25, 2023, the early version became available. The city administration has stated that it will be completed by 2026. They are planning to diversify the Metaverse by adding functions related to real estate, cryptocurrencies, etc.
Neopets
Neopets, a website for playing with a virtual pet, was launched back in 1999 and peaked in popularity in the 2000s. Now the team is testing the waters of Web3 with their Metaverse. Prior to that, the company launched an NFT collection of customizable digital pets in 2021.
The game bets on nostalgia and takes inspiration from the original version to accommodate those users who grew up playing Neopets. It is based on the play-to-earn concept and has a native token NeoPoints Meta ($NPM) which can be swapped into $CSM – the in-game currency. In January 2023, the project raised $4 million in investments from industry leaders.
Indian musician AR Rahman’s “Katraar” Metaverse
Fans of Indian music all over the world recently got some good news: award-winning musician and composer AR Rahman is going to be a mentor of a Metaverse project called Katraar which will be launched soon. He announced it on his Twitter page and shared a sneak peek of what it is going to look like.
The platform is going to help young musicians and other creative people with the promotion of their art. What is more, Katraar is meant for building a strong community of music lovers, and fans of AR Rahman will be able to assess exclusive music via the platform.
A Metaverse game from the United Nations
On January 24, 2023, the UN Environment Programme launched a game called Apollo’s Edition which is a part of an education platform Reset Earth. The game is supposed to teach teenagers (13-18 y.o.) about the importance of environmental issues, give them reliable resources for research, and entertain them at the same time.
The game’s plot revolves around Apollo, a Metaverse influencer, and her robot companion Rem, who are fighting climate change, pollution, and other environmental issues. Aside from engaging activities, there are episodes (or lessons) with educational materials available on the site.
Oreo Metaverse experience
One more proof that anything can (and probably will) exist in Web3 came from Oreo – a well-known brand of snacks. The company launched a virtual experience called Oreoverse. It offers users 4 interactive games inside a cookie world. Each win gets players a prize – an Oreo-themed Instagram filter. Moreover, they can win up to $50,000.
The games are available for the owners of Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro headsets. And while seeing a virtual snack right in front of you and not being able to eat it might be quite an irritating experience, more and more brands adopt new technologies, including those related to food and beverages.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it has become obvious at this point that Metaverse is turning from just another buzzword into a staple not only for tech companies but also mainstream brands, governments, international organizations, and individuals. It is hardly surprising: with the variety of possibilities these technologies bring we can expect more and more diverse Metaverse products in the future.
